Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about relative strength, ETF tracking, market breadth, and using ThematicView day to day.
Getting Started
What is ThematicView.com?
ThematicView.com is a market analysis platform that tracks Relative Strength (RS) of ETFs, thematic stock baskets, and individual stocks versus the S&P 500 (SPY). It also surfaces Stockbee-style market breadth indicators to help you assess overall market health. Use it to spot sector rotation, find leading stocks, and time your entries with the broader market.
How do I get started?
Start with the Dashboard for a market snapshot — RS tables, breadth bars, and rotation signals. Visit Market Breadth for a deeper look at daily thrust and participation indicators. Use the Screener to filter the full stock universe by RS, moving averages, and price action. Add ETFs you want to track on the ETF Tracker page, and explore thematic baskets under Sub-Themes. Save anything to a named Watchlist.
What does Relative Strength (RS) mean?
Relative Strength measures how a stock or ETF performs compared to SPY (S&P 500) over a given period. An RS above 1.0 means it is outperforming SPY; below 1.0 means underperforming. The RS Percentile ranks today's RS against the instrument's own history — a high percentile means it is strong relative to its own past. The 5D Change shows whether momentum is improving or fading.
Dashboard
What does the Dashboard show?
The Dashboard is your daily market overview. It displays RS summary tables for ETFs and sub-theme baskets, breadth bars showing how many themes are in strong vs. weak RS territory, and a rotation panel highlighting which sectors are improving or declining over the last 5 days.
What are Improving and Declining baskets?
Improving baskets have a positive 5-day RS change — their relative strength is trending upward. Declining baskets have a negative 5-day RS change. This helps you identify rotation: money flowing into or out of specific sectors before it shows up in price.
Market Breadth
What is the Market Breadth page?
Market Breadth implements the Stockbee Market Monitor — a set of breadth indicators developed by Pradeep Bonde to gauge market health. It tracks the number of stocks up or down 4%+ in a day (thrust), cumulative 5- and 10-day ratios, longer-term moves (25%/50% over a month or quarter), stocks above their 50-day MA, and full-market advance/decline and new-high/new-low counts.
What do the thrust ratios (5D / 10D) mean?
The 5-day ratio is the total number of stocks up 4%+ over the last 5 days divided by the total down 4%+. A ratio above 1.0 means more stocks are thrusting upward than downward — a bullish signal. The 10-day ratio smooths this out over two weeks. Readings above 2.0 on the 5D ratio historically coincide with strong market phases.
What are the monthly/quarterly breadth columns?
These count how many stocks in the liquid universe have gained or lost 25%+ over the past month (20 trading days) or quarter (65 days), or 50%+ over the past month. High readings on the up side indicate broad participation in a rally. The 34-day ±13% columns are an additional medium-term thrust measure.
ETF Tracker
How do I add an ETF to my tracker?
Click the "+" button on the ETF Tracker page and enter one or more ticker symbols (e.g., QQQ, XLK, ARKK). You can also save any ETF from the Screener or Sub-Themes pages directly to your tracker. RS metrics and price history are fetched automatically after you add it.
What do the different time ranges (1M, 3M, 6M, 1Y) show?
Each range changes the historical window used to calculate RS Percentile and display sparklines. Shorter ranges (1M) are more sensitive to recent moves; longer ranges (6M, 1Y) reveal sustained leadership or weakness. Switch ranges to see whether an ETF's strength is a new development or a durable trend.
What is RS Percentile vs RS 3D/5D Avg?
RS Percentile ranks today's RS ratio against the ETF's own history for the selected range — 100% means it has never been stronger. The 3D and 5D averages smooth out daily noise by averaging the percentile over the last 3 or 5 trading days. The 5D Change column shows momentum: positive means it is getting stronger, negative means it is weakening.
What is the holdings drawer?
Click any ETF row to open the holdings drawer, which lists the ETF's top constituent stocks with their individual RS metrics. This lets you quickly see which stocks are driving the ETF's relative strength — or dragging it down.
Sub-Themes
What are Sub-Themes?
Sub-Themes are curated baskets of stocks grouped by investment theme — for example, AI Infrastructure, Cybersecurity, or Biotech. Each basket's RS metrics are computed from its constituent stocks, giving you a theme-level view of relative strength that cuts across traditional sector boundaries.
What are the four view modes?
Themes: a hierarchical view grouped by parent theme with expandable sub-themes. Sub-Themes: a flat sortable table of all baskets with their RS metrics. Top RS: the individual stocks with the highest relative strength across all baskets — great for finding leading names. Charts: sparkline charts for each basket so you can compare RS visually at a glance.
What are Custom Baskets?
Custom Baskets let you create your own stock groups alongside the curated sub-themes. Add any tickers you want, and the platform will compute RS metrics for your basket the same way it does for built-in sub-themes. Useful for tracking a specific portfolio, a competitor group, or any thematic idea of your own.
Screener
What is the Screener?
The Screener shows the full tracked stock universe with price, volume, market cap, daily change, and RS metrics. It supports rich filtering: moving average position (MA10/20/50/200 above or below price), RS percentile ranges across 1M/3M/6M/1Y, price tightness (how close price is to its MA), ADR%, average volume, and more. Click any row to open the stock detail page.
How do I bulk-save stocks to a Watchlist?
Apply your filters, then use the bulk-save button (top of the table) to add all filtered results to a named Watchlist in one click. You can select which watchlist to save to, or create a new one on the spot. This is the fastest way to build a watchlist from a screener query.
What is the Tightness filter?
Tightness measures how close the current price is to a moving average — a tight stock is consolidating near its MA without wide swings. Tight setups often precede breakouts. You can filter for Tight, Medium, or Loose to focus on stocks in a specific phase of their price structure.
Watchlist
How does the Watchlist work?
You can create multiple named watchlists and add stocks, ETFs, or sub-theme baskets to each one. Each watchlist shows RS metrics, price changes, and sparkline charts for every item. Watchlists sync across devices in real time.
How do I add items to a Watchlist?
Use the bookmark icon on any stock row in the Screener, ETF Tracker, or Sub-Themes pages. On the stock detail page there is a full watchlist popover that lets you add to multiple lists at once. From the Screener you can also bulk-add all filtered results to a list.
News
What is the News feed?
The News page aggregates the latest market news headlines relevant to the stocks and themes you follow. It is updated throughout the trading day so you can stay on top of catalysts without leaving the platform.
Data & Timing
When is data updated?
Market breadth is computed at 20:30 UTC (4:30 PM ET) each weekday, right after market close. ETF prices update at 21:30 UTC, RS calculations at 22:00–22:30 UTC, and the full stock universe at 22:30 UTC. During market hours, ETF intraday prices refresh every hour from 14:00–20:00 UTC.
Why does the 'Updated' timestamp show an old time?
The timestamp reflects the last successful data ingestion. On weekends and market holidays no cron jobs run, so it will show the previous trading day's update time. During market hours, intraday ETF prices update hourly; end-of-day RS data populates after 22:00 UTC each weekday.
